Animals Cows Horses

Cows and Horses don’t mix very well…

The road in front of our house is almost never used. Our neighbors find that it’s faster to drive away from us to get to town. That means we are farther from town than all of our neighbors no matter which way we go, but that’s fine cause we almost never have traffic on our road. Emphasis on “almost.”

About a mile North of our house is a cow farm who apparently uses our road to herd their cows. We’ve been here for a month and haven’t seen them before, but this is what happened:

We hear “Moo”ing outside, so we go to check it out, and are presented with this:

Here’s another close up of the cows:

Wow… That’s a lot of cows. Apparently the horses thought so too, because they were running around frantically trying to get as far away from the cows as possible. At this time, we had Liana (the grey) and Onora (the two-year-old bay) in the arena, and Jett (the black horse) and Ossette (the older bay) in the coral that you see in the picture above.

In this picture you see Jett and Ossette looking at the cows, and Liana and Onora are hiding just off to the right of the screen.

Just after I took this picture, Liana and Onora both jumped through different fence posts! They just couldn’t stand being that close to the cows, so BAM! They were out.

(Note the broken fence post in this picture. Thats the one that Onora jumped through.)

Lianna jumped through a fence post off to the right, which didn’t get her any closer to the others:

“How did you guys get on that side of the fence?”

Here is a close up of the fence that Liana jumped through:

And of course, after the big scare:

“Where did all those cows go?”

Now if I make a “Moo” all the horses look up at me.

Good times on the Ranch,

Animals Chickens

Baby Chickens

Our First Chickens!!

Well I finally decided to go ahead with it and get some chicks today. I wasn’t sure I was going to get them this year with going to LA twice and being gone a long time for my wedding. So I researched and talked to a lot of people that have chickens and I was assured they were very low maintenance so whoever house-sits for me wont have a hard time taking care of them.

I decided to get 5 as sometimes they don’t all lay at once and I use about 2 eggs minimum a day so I figured if I get extras I will give them to mom. I went with a variety of colors but made sure they were all good layers and friendly. We decided to give them fun farm names too…. so far the black is Buttercup (named by a friend), I named the yellow one Daisy, and still not sure on the golden ones. Ashton’s favorite is the muti-colored brown one, I said she looks like a hawk so that name seems to be sticking. So if anyone has any fun names please throw them my way.

Right now they are in a big box which will hold them for a few months while we build a coop. One of our many summer projects!!

Ashton's favorite, Hawk

Snow Again

It Snows AGAIN!

Tuesday, the first of May, it was 80 degrees and Anna got a horrible sunburn.

Two days later, on the third of MAY(!), it full on snowed for at least four hours. Then today, it lightly snowed and hailed sporadically throughout the day.

This picture was taken today from my office. You can see the mountain just beyond our property is still white with yesterday’s (and a little of today’s) snow.

And I thought LA weather was random!

Pictures of our New Property!

Hey All,

Here is a picture from the top of our hill on the West end of our property (I’ve outlined our property boundaries with green):

As you can see, it is quite a hike to get up to the top of the mountain.

Here a satellite picture from Google maps of our property. The picture is a couple years old (also outlined in green. The “X” is where I took the above picture.

Rosco Snow

It Snowed in April!

Yes it did. It snowed yesterday, and today. Yesterday’s snow actually stayed for about 12 hours. Today’s snow melted almost instantly.

In this picture you can see the snow, our hammock, Rosco, and our two closest neighbors (those are both 2 1/2 story buildings).

Rosco, Snow and our Neighbors!

Heres a picture of the mountain behind our house today, as I was driving back home from town.
